The view from my bike Taken the other day. Quote of the Day Question: Stephen Hawking worried about unintended consequences of machine intelligence. Do you share his concern? Answer: I worry about the unintended consequences of human intelligence, such as climate change, human-made pathogens, mass poverty, and environmental catastrophe. The quest for AI should result in new technology, greater understanding, and smarter decision making. AI may one day become our greatest tool in averting such disasters. However, we should proceed cautiously and establish clear rules prohibiting unacceptable uses of AI, such as banning the development of autonomous weapons.
Bless your heart, John, for reminding me in your Jan. 12 posting of the Stones’ Far Away Eyes, a song I’d long forgotten but have now added to my playlist. They’re obviously having fun with the genre, but the arrangement, musicianship and delivery are all superb, and the girl with her far away eyes encapsulates the hunger for the elusive that underpins the best country music. Country, as I’m sure you know, is one of the many roots of rock ‘n’ roll, and the Stones are rockers nonpareil. BTW, they’ve recorded many country tunes over the years, from the raunchy Country Honk to the resigned No Expectations, which includes the great line “Our love is like our music/It's here, and then it's gone.” Regards, Patrick Langston, Ottawa
