Thank you for the link to Gus Simmons memoir. I look forward to reading it.

I spent an unforgettable 2 years (mid. 1980s) covering the state legislature (then, as now, legendarily corrupt) and exploring the state from the Kanawha River (home to Nitro WV) to the distant hills and towns that even then were in precipitous economic decline. Residents of the state don’t really own even the land they live on, and their elected representatives know it.
